The Suspects

After a thorough interview process of all the guests in attendance at Lord Crofton’s dinner party, Police have identified four main suspects. They believe each suspect has a suitable motive and means. In addition, Police have gathered evidence from their homes as well as several anonymous tip offs from Village locals that have assisted their enquiries. Despite this, detectives are still clueless and need your help to solve the mystery.

The four suspects are Elizabeth, the daughter of the local Vicar, Isabella, a mysterious new comer to the village, Nancy, the notorious village rebel and Sophia, the daughter of Lord Crofton.

Below, you can review the profile and evidence file for each suspect.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth is the daughter of the local vicar. Her wholesome appearance and good-natured personality in public had made her a favourite among the villagers.

Despite her gentle demeanour, she has a strong sense of justice and is known to stand up for what she believes in. On several occassions, locals had reported hearing her shout in the Church house late in the evening.

Lord Crofton had recently announced his intent to build an apartment block on the church grounds. Friends of Elizabeth had told Police that she was incensed at the proposal and had promised to oppose it by ‘any means necessary’. Perhaps Elizabeth believed that if Lord Crofton were out of the picture, this construction would no longer go ahead?

Police have also been alerted to the fact that Elizabeth had access to a type of poison called hemlock, which grows wild in the church’s graveyard. Elizabeth had been at the party with Lord Crofton the night before, providing baked goods. This would be the perfect opportunity to lace the food with poison to give to Lord Crofton.

Isabella

Isabella is the newest resident of Lavender Lane and while she seems friendly enough, she keeps to herself and doesn't reveal much about her past. With a soft Spanish accent, Isabella has an air of mystery about her and many in the village are curious about her background and why she chose to move to Lavender Lane.

As a keen gardener, Isabella is knowledgeable in toxic substances and could have created the poison herself using deadly plants. Isabella had also been at the party with Lord Crofton, as a guest of Elizabeth and the Vicar.

Unlike the other guests, her motive is unclear and she is only under suspicion because Elizabeth had reported to Police that she saw Isabella serving a drink to Lord Crofton at the dinner party.

Saint & Sofia - Lavender Lane
Nancy

Nancy is the rebellious daughter of the village police chief and her personality often puts her at odds with her father's authority. Nancy is brash, confident, and not afraid to speak her mind. She has a criminal record for petty theft and vandalism, but many locals in the village believe that she's just misunderstood.

Nancy had recently found out that Lord Crofton had anonymously reported her to the police for causing trouble in the village, for which she was arrested, found guilty and served a suspended sentence. Perhaps Nancy wanted revenge?

Nancy had access to a type of poison called nightshade which she could have stolen from her father's police station. Whilst not invited to last night’s party, guests have reported to Police that Nancy had gatecrashed, served herself several drinks from the bar before causing a drunken scene in front of Lord Crofton. She was then forcibly removed by Gieves, Lord Crofton’s butler.

Saint & Sofia - Lavender Lane
Sophia

Sophia Crofton is a meek but eccentric young woman. While she's often quiet and reserved there's also an aloofness that makes some of the villagers uneasy.

Sophia had the most to gain after the death of her father Lord Crofton as she inherited her father's wealth. Despite her love for the family estate, Sophia can be unpredictable and her behaviour can be erratic, with sudden outbursts of shouting at the staff.

According to her friends, Sophia was angry with her father for not giving her control of the family estate, as she was increasingly concerned she may be left out of his will. Perhaps she saw his death as a way to gain control of the estate and family wealth?

Sophia could have obtained poison from her own medicine cabinet as she had many prescriptions, for both real and imaginary ailments.

Sophia was by Lord Crofton’s side for much of the evening at the party and had frequent access to both his food and drink.

Identify the killer

Based on the evidence (and clues) above, please identify the killer by clicking their image adjacent and discover the method and true motive.

Correct!

With your help, it was discovered that the killer was Isabella. She had recently found out that Lord Crofton was her biological father (in the letter in the evidence file) and had been left out of his will which fuelled her anger and bitterness towards him. She had read up on Inheritance Law, a book about which was found outside her home (and also included in the evidence file).

With her knowledge of deadly plants as a keen gardener, Isabella had access to the deadly foxglove plant growing in her garden (pictured twice above), which she used to create the poison.

On the night of the party, she offered to make Lord Crofton a drink and slipped in the poison which was kept in a vial around her neck (as worn in her profile photo). It had fallen off as she left the party in haste and had been sent to the lab for testing before being photographed by Police.

Thank you for helping solve the mystery of Lavender Lane, the villagers of Little Crofton thank you dearly.
